Welcome! The work of Heart of West Michigan United Way includes focused impact in the areas of early childhood development and literacy. We are working to influence community attitudes, networks, neighborhoods and systems to create lasting changes in our community. In Early Childhood Development, we house and are part of the Early Childhood Development Commission, a community collaborative whose goal is that every child in Kent County be ready to succeed in life and in school. While there are several strategies to achieve success, United Way is focused on quality early care and education and parent support programs. Our community’s Literacy goal is to ensure that every individual is able to read, write and speak, and to compute and solve problems at a level of proficiency necessary to function on the job, in the family and in society. United Way houses and is part of the Greater Grand Rapids Reads community collaborative. We are especially focused on closing the third grade reading gap between urban and suburban students through neighborhood and school-based tutoring and mentoring programs. We are also committed to improving the adult literacy rate. Your contributions, volunteerism and dedication to our community allow us to invest in 116 programs that build a stronger community and improve lives. Please join us in giving hope to our community!
