Alexis de Tocqueville Society

Heart of West Michigan United Way improves lives and builds a stronger community through the generosity of donors, volunteers and community partners. The Alexis de Tocqueville Society encourages individuals to deepen their understanding, commitment and support of United Way. Members of this society invest at least $10,000 annually in our community through United Way, and they join a group of individuals who provide philanthropic leadership on both the local and national levels.

In 2005, members of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society invested more than $2 million in our community through their contributions to Heart of West Michigan United Way. Today, 123 members belong to this group locally.

Alexis de Tocqueville Society members benefit from:

  • the opportunity to give through a high quality organization to assure that dollars are spent efficiently and effectively to achieve the greatest impact in our community.
  • the opportunity to work and meet with our community’s business and civic leaders to address critical needs, develop solutions and build a strong community for the future.

    One Child.  30 Minutes.  Once a Week.

    In just 30 minutes a week, volunteers can transform a child's life. Volunteer reading tutors are matched with children at 15 schools in Grand Rapids. 

    They read together for 30 minutes each week during the school year.
